Gold medal in SIMA Innovation Awards for innovative combine harvester wheel system

During the press conference on 24 November in the run-up to SIMA 2017 in Paris, it was announced that Trelleborg has won a Gold Medal in the “SIMA Innovation Awards” for the VIP™ system “Variable Inflation Pressure – VIP™”. With development partner Fendt, Trelleborg has developed an intelligent complete wheel for combine harvesters which adjusts the tyre pressure according to the fill level of the grain tank.

Fendt Marketing Director Roland Schmidt

Explaining the partnership with Trelleborg, Fendt Marketing Director Roland Schmidt commented: “Following the introduction of the VarioGrip integral tyre pressure regulation system on Fendt tractors, it is only natural that we should turn our attention to solutions in the harvesting technology sector. Therefore the development of an intelligent front wheel for combine harvesters is just a logical technical advance which will make a contribution in the important area of soil protection.”

The SIMA Innovation Awards, launched in 1931, acknowledge innovative products, technologies and services in the agricultural industry. Special innovations, such as the VIP™ system are awarded a Gold Medal. This system is an intelligent front wheel which automatically adjusts the pressure of a combine harvester tyre according to the current load. In the field, parameters such as combine harvester weight and grain tank fill level are included in the VIP™ calculation. The aim of the continuous measurements and pressure adjustments is to achieve the maximum front tyre contact area at all times. This distributes the pressure across the field and reduces soil compaction – providing active soil protection during the harvest.

Technically, the VIP™ system is equipped with several sensors which measure various parameters all the time, including the load carried, tyre inflation pressure and temperature. The data is processed in an electronic central processor which controls the tyre compressor and valve. This allows flexible adjustment of the tyre pressure. The entire VIP™ system is built into the wheel rim and is controlled by the operator using an app. The intelligent tyre pressure regulation system also works on Fendt combine harvesters with AutoLevel slope compensation when working on slopes. It is currently being tested on Fendt combine harvesters from the X and P series in a variety of applications.
