In-house weather station for Fendt

On Thursday, 7 December, Jörg Kachelmann, Christoph Gröblinghoff and Thomas Gehrke unveiled the Fendt weather station on the factory grounds in Marktoberdorf. This was the 1,000th Meteosol weather station in Germany.

Jörg Kachelmann (weather expert)

"If you want to predict the weather locally, you have to measure it locally," says Swiss weather expert Jörg Kachelmann. "But today there are fewer weather stations than 50 or 100 years ago. As a result, forecasts are not as precise as farmers need them to be. Due to its location, the Allgäu has very localised weather conditions. This weather station now covers a previous gap in the measurement network and will ensure more precise forecasts in future."

"In 2023, we registered the highest number of insurance claims to date due to hail, storms, rain, frost or drought. Bavaria was particularly affected this year," reports Thomas Gehrke, Member of the Board of Vereinigte Hagelversicherung. "We specialise in insuring weather damage in the agricultural sector. Damage can be reduced to some extent through better forecasting. That's why we want to improve our coverage of the measuring network and provide farmers and contractors with precise data for their work."

A weather station from Meteosol is now recording information on air temperature, humidity, pressure, global radiation and precipitation on the Fendt factory premises. In future, the station will be expanded and complemented by a module for recording wind speed, gusts and wind direction. The station will also measure the agrometeorologically relevant parameters of leaf moisture, soil and near-soil temperature and soil water content. With the expansion, the station will be relocated once again.

Christoph Gröblinghoff (Chairman of the Fendt Management Board)

"Precise weather forecasts determine the work scheduling of farmers and contractors worldwide. Decisions can be made on the basis of these forecasts, such as: Are the conditions suitable for sowing, fertilising or harvesting?" says Christoph Gröblinghoff, Chairman of the Fendt Management Board. "With this weather station, we are now recording weather data and contributing to better coverage of the meteorological network. The more accurate the forecasts are, the more helpful they are for the farmers' work."

Fendt approved a sustainability strategy three years ago. Targets were set for the various divisions in which the company can also actively contribute to greater sustainability.

About the weather station

Weather stations from meteosol® were developed jointly by Vereinigte Hagel Versicherung and Jörg Kachelmann and can be equipped with various sensors according to the modular principle. These record highly precise weather data in accordance with the scientific standards of the World Meteorological Organisation, on the basis of which a weather forecast can be produced. The recorded data can be compared thanks to fixed location requirements for the weather station and can be incorporated directly into a forecast model.
